Learn on Your Schedule
All Batten Online courses are fully asynchronous. There are no live class sessions to attend, no required login times, and no video calls you have to schedule around. You access your coursework through Blackboard — Batten's online learning platform — and complete assignments, discussions, readings, and projects on your own schedule within each week's deadlines.
Your instructors are active and engaged online, providing feedback, answering questions, and facilitating discussions throughout each term. You're not on your own — you're just not tied to a classroom.
The Mini-Term Format
Rather than one long semester, Batten Online divides the academic year into shorter, focused terms. Most students take two courses per term — similar to taking four courses in a traditional semester, but spread across two concentrated sessions. That focus tends to work well for adults who want to give each subject real attention without juggling too many things at once.
Full-semester enrollment is also available in the fall for students whose program or course selection works better on a traditional 15-week schedule. Your advisor can help you figure out which structure fits your goals.
In addition to the main terms, Batten offers a late December Term with a selection of courses for students who want to get ahead, catch up, or simply keep moving through their program during what would otherwise be a break.
Textbooks Are Included
Electronic textbooks are included in your tuition rate. You won't get a bill from the bookstore on top of your tuition — the cost of required course materials is already covered. That's one less thing to budget for and one less barrier between you and getting started.
What You'll Need
Batten's online courses run on Blackboard, a widely used and well-supported learning management system. You'll need a reliable computer and internet connection. Most standard laptops and desktop computers work fine — no specialized hardware required. Specific technical requirements for individual courses (software, lab simulations, etc.) are listed in each course syllabus before you register.

You're Not on Your Own
Online students have access to the same academic support resources as students on campus — including a dedicated online student advisor, subject tutoring, writing support, and full library access.
Batten Online has a dedicated student advisor whose sole focus is online students. Your advisor helps you plan your course schedule, navigate program requirements, connect you with support resources, and keep your degree plan on track from enrollment through graduation. You'll work with the same person throughout your time at Batten — not a different face every semester.
Individual and group tutoring is available for most subjects and courses through Batten's Center for Student Success. Subject tutors are student peers who have excelled in the courses they tutor and are selected for both their knowledge and their ability to explain concepts clearly. Online subject tutoring is available throughout the year — not just during fall and spring terms — so you have support whenever your coursework demands it.
The Writing Studio provides support at any stage of the writing process, for any writing assignment. Writing Consultants are professionals with graduate degrees — often adjunct faculty at Batten — who work with students on developing their writing skills and individual process. Student Peer Writing Tutors are trained writers nominated by their professors for their writing ability. Online writing support is available throughout the year.
Online students have full access to Batten's library resources, including research databases, digital collections, and librarian support. Librarians are active partners in course and assignment design and are available to help students navigate research — whether you're working on a literature review, a policy analysis, or a capstone project. You can reach library staff by phone, email, or virtual appointment. You never have to set foot on campus to get the research support you need.
