Transfer Students

If you have fewer than 12 semester hours of college credit, you'll need to submit an official high school transcript. Test scores are not required for admission. If you'd like to submit SAT or ACT scores, you can arrange to have them sent directly to Batten:

Applicants who are not high school graduates may be admitted on the basis of GED test results.

If you have 12 or more semester hours of college credit, you'll need to submit official transcripts from every institution where you've earned credit. A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher is generally required for transfer admission.

Transfer credit is accepted from regionally accredited institutions only. Credit is not transferable for:

• Grades below a C (2.0)
• Developmental or non-credit courses
• Failing grades earned under a pass/fail system

Credit awarded must be equivalent to courses offered at Batten University or logical extensions of such courses. Students transferring from two-year institutions may transfer no more than 64 semester hours.

Graduate students may transfer up to 12 credits into most Batten Online master's programs. The remaining coursework must be completed at Batten. Transfer credits are approved by the individual graduate program and recorded on the student's transcript.

• MBA: Permits transfer of up to 12 credits.
• M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership: Accepts transfer credits only under exceptional circumstances. Contact the M.A.Ed. Graduate Program Director for clarification.

Batten follows ACE (American Council on Education) guidelines when granting credit for educational experiences in the armed services. Submit your Joint Services Transcript or equivalent — credit is awarded for experiences equivalent to Batten coursework, subject to faculty review.

Batten also has specific academy agreements in place:

• Virginia Beach Police Department Basic Recruit Academy — 32 credits awarded to active-duty Virginia Beach Police Officers who have completed the academy.
• Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office Academy — 23 credits awarded to active-duty Virginia Beach Deputies who have completed the academy.
• Batten Prison Education Initiative — 20 credits awarded to active-duty Chesapeake Correctional Officers who have completed the Corrections Officer Academy. Officers may pursue the Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts and/or the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice or a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

Entering students may apply for credit in disciplines where they have taken CLEP examinations and achieved a score at or above the 50th percentile. Credit is available for both general and subject examinations in areas applicable to Batten's curriculum. Current students must receive prior approval from the Registrar before taking CLEP exams for credit.

Advanced Placement (AP): Batten grants course credit for AP examinations of the College Entrance Examination Board. Contact the Registrar's Office for the current AP credit table.

International Baccalaureate (IB): Batten grants advanced placement and/or credit for a score of 5 or higher on Higher Level IB examinations. No credit is awarded for Subsidiary Level examinations.

Credit is not awarded for both an AP and an IB exam in the same subject.

Batten follows ACE guidelines when evaluating professional certifications for credit. In some cases, professional training and certification may earn academic credit. Submit official documentation to the Registrar's Office for evaluation.

Batten awards up to 12 undergraduate credits for knowledge acquired through professional and lived experience — including civic, community, or volunteer work and in-service training that occurred after high school and prior to enrolling at Batten.

How to Apply

Submit a written request to the Registrar's Office that includes:

• A statement describing the experience you'd like considered for credit (guidelines available from the Registrar's Office)

Applications are reviewed by the Registrar's Office. Once accepted, credits are applied to degree requirements. Credits may only be applied toward major or minor requirements with approval from the department Chair.

Applications must be complete to be considered.
